With such a small community here on Mars we would like to get a good magazine circulating the colonies.
This assignment tasked us with creating a magazine cover (including a number of key parts) for the Colonies. It was also intended that we focus it to a target audience on the colonies, use demographics, etc., so I chose to take a short survey of the class for the most interesting character in the class. The choices were myself (as I had a very well-known campaign for president at the start of the year), Eddie the Donkey (a part of one of our first projects, something of an inside joke and mascot rolled into one), and Andy Saraka’s Cheese Grater Man (a side project he made, which was very humerous). After the results were in, Eddie had won with eighteen votes, Cheese Grater Man just behind with sixteen, and myself taking last at a mere twelve. I created a rough sketch, as seen here:
I then took the original image of Eddie and added sunglasses, placed a frame around him, and I spruced up the image a little bit with touches such as backgrounds, carefully-placed shadows, and a few blending adjustments. The article titles are based upon a few jokes or references to things in the class, such as Ten Reasons You Should Never Trust a Lion, which is a reference to the colony competition in the Academy; the colony of Atlas is represented by a lion, and is currently leading the annual Colony Cup. Other touches include the barcode (which, when scanned, says the text “winky wonky” in reference to Eddy), the title of SpaceTime, and more. The completed images are below: one as designed, and two with rendering options. My personal preference is the bottom-most image, “Mag003” option.
